Where are the ladies?

A senior thesis project on the lack of women-led startups receiving VC funding.

What do you mean, "where are the ladies"?

“Startups: An Alpha Male Pissing-Contest?” This was the title of a FastCompany article written on April 2011. The article examined a question that has recently been brought to attention by women (and men) in the startup world: “Why aren't enough women seeking angel and VC money? And why aren't more women-led startups getting funded?”

A look at the numbers tells the story quite well. Only 4-9% of all deals go to women entrepreneurs [source], and less than 10% of companies with female co-founders have been venture funded. My research addresses these facts and asks the same question from a sociological standpoint. In a world where the Facebooks, Groupons, and Twitters (all male-led ventures) have been gaining so much media attention, it is worth addressing the glaring absence of the other half of the population in a space that is growing rapidly.

If you're a startup founder (male or female) or VC yourself and think you can help, you can take my survey, sign-up for an interview afterwards, or pass this site along to a someone you know.

Take the survey

Are you a startup founder or VC? Please take my survey.

The survey takes about 10-20 minutes to complete.

survey for founders

or

survey for vc's

You can also sign-up for an optional interview at the end of each survey.

Who qualifies?

You can take the survey if...
    1. You're a startup founder (male or female) who has succeeded or failed at raising angel or venture capital.
    1. You're a VC based in the U.S.
    1. You will remain ANONYMOUS throughout the study.

  • But wait! I'm not any of these, but I still want to contribute.

I would love to hear any thoughts on the topic. If you think you can add value to my study, you can email me.

    About the researcher

My name is Alisha Ramos, a senior at Harvard University pursuing a B.A. in Sociology with a secondary field in History. My interests include entrepreneurship (I co-founded Eventplease.com and some other stuff), technology, design, and gender equality (I am President of the 25th Harvard-Radcliffe Women's Leadership Project). All these interests combined led me to write my thesis on the topic of women in entrepreneurship.
